AIR for Android app turns Nexus One into slot car controller (video)

Posted in Articles by Nicr on the June 24th, 2010

AIR for Android, a Phidgets motor control, a slot car set, and a custom built LEGO housing for good measure — if this project isn't meant for Engadget, we don't know what is! The premise is pretty straightforward: Grant Skinner uses his Nexus One to send accelerometer data to a desktop PC, which then sends it to a motor controller. In turn, the controller tells the cars how fast to go. Tilt forward a little bit, and the car accelerates a little bit. Lean forward a lot, and it picks up ……

The iPhone 4 is no small thing to review. As most readers of Engadget are well aware, in the gadget world a new piece of Apple hardware is a major event, preceded by rumors, speculation, an over-the-top announcement, and finally days, weeks, or months of anticipation from an ever-widening fan base. The iPhone 4 is certainly no exception — in fact, it ma……

JBL ships MS-8 digital processor, promises to 'revolutionize' car audio

Posted in Articles by Nicr on the June 17th, 2010

Remember that JBL MS-8 you plopped atop your must-have list back in March? No? Fret not, as quite a bit has happened in the meantime. Today, however, the aforesaid outfit is shipping its new in-car digital processor, which remains a bit of a mystery device that magically improves audio quality for up to four seating positions simultaneously. JBL assures us that the real secret sauce lies in the software, and with it, people will apparently “never experience music in their vehicle the same way a……

Garmin nuvi 3790T review

Posted in Articles by Nicr on the June 17th, 2010

For the most part, standalone navigators have retained their same form factor for the better part of the last five years. Each one looked like the other, with the main differentiators being a fold-out or integrated antenna and a big or small display. With intense competition coming from the smartphone space (yeah, we're looking at you, Google), the bigwigs at TomTom and Garmin are obviously thinking of ways to innovate and keep their consumer PNDs relevant. We aren't exactly convinced t……

T-Mobile Garminfone now on sale, price still boggles the mind

Posted in Articles by Nicr on the June 10th, 2010

As promised, T-Mobile has brought the Garminfone to retail today for $199 after $50 rebate on a new two-year contract, calling into question the viability of selling a nav-centric Android device with an HVGA display, 3 megapixel camera, and no 3.5mm headphone jack for $250 out of pocket in the store. We suppose the awesome car dock will attract some, but the myTouch 3G Slide certainly seems like the better option for less money — maybe this would work at $99 or $149, we suppose. Not that we……

Volkswagen 2011 Phaeton can read street signs using windshield mounted camera

Posted in Articles by Nicr on the June 10th, 2010

Volkswagen's showing off its 2011 Phaeton all over the place, and it's boasting some pretty interesting features if you're the nerdy type. In addition to regular navigational systems, the Phaeton will be the first to integrate a new system which can download Google maps satellite images and points of interest info over a mobile phone, and then laid over existing maps within the GPS, providing a far superior, up to date database of information to the driver. And then there's the ……

Lexus breaks a champagne glass with a $375,000 hammer, so to speak

Posted in Articles by Nicr on the June 3rd, 2010

The older among you might vividly remember Lexus' old ad campaign from the company's early years whereby they'd run a car on a dyno with an unbreaking, unfaltering pyramid of champagne glasses perfectly balanced on the hood. To celebrate the launch of the $375,000 LFA supercar, Lexus put a new twist on the theme by setting out to break the glass — with sound alone. Apparently, Lexus matched the champagne glass' resonant frequency to that of the LFA's exhaust note, bursting……
